Strategic Positioning of the Therapist in Session: Creating a Strong Therapeutic Alliance

Abstract Therapy is a complex endeavor requiring not only technical strategies to solve patients’ problems, but also relational strategies to bind the various “resistances” of the patient into carrying out the technical stratagem. The way the therapist interacts with the patient forms the substrate of relational strategies. This article proposes a new map for understanding the various positions that a therapist can assume in session to execute relational strategies and form a strong therapeutic alliance.
