BRIEF STRATEGIC FAMILY THERAPY: AN EMPIRICALLY VALIDATED FAMILY THERAPY FOR ADOLESCENTS WITH DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS
Michael S. Robbins, Viviana E. Horigian, & José Szapocznik

Brief strategic family therapy (BSFTTM; Szapocznik, Hervis, & Schwartz, 2003; Szapocznik & Kurtines, 1989) is a systemic approach that has been developed and tested in a program of clinical practice and research over more than three decades. BSFTTM is an integrative model that combines structural and strategic theory and intervention techniques to address systemic/relational (primarily family) interactions that are associated with child and adolescent behavior problems. The structural orientation of BSFTTM draws on the work of Minuchin (Minuchin, 1974, Minuchin & Fishman, 1981; Minuchin, Rosman, & Baker, 1978), and the strategic aspects of BSFTTM were influenced by Haley (1976) and Madanes (1981).
