IDENTIFYING AND EXPLOITING THE PATIENT’S RESISTANCE TO CHANGE IN BRIEF STRATEGIC THERAPY
Matteo Papantuono

Abstract: The aim of this article is to underline the importance given by Brief Strategic Therapy in identifying the different types of resistances to change, as a means of gathering valuable information regarding the specific pathology and patient, so as to be able to exploit and convert it into a useful instrument for the strategic therapist. The Centro di Terapia Strategica (CTS) of Arezzo has been working on this project for the past fifteen years and it has come to identify specific strategies and stratagems to overcome the different typologies of resistances, to bring patients to go beyond their emotional blocks and constructed limitations. This article presents extracts from real case studies to give the reader a clear step by step description of the different resistances to change and how the strategic therapist proceeds to unveil the often unexpressed undermining resistances and turn them into a true vehicle of change.
